Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets

29 July 2013 13:40:35 Sport news, comment and results | theguardian.com

The latest news and today's best bets Monday's best bet, by Tony Paley Le Chat D'Or (4.30) didn't get a lot of luck when fourth in a Haydock race that has thrown up three subsequent winners so the handicapper has taken a chance in leaving him on the same mark, and he can capitalise at Ayr today. Tipping competition - a new week starts tomorrow Congratulations to Mulldog, who won last week's competition, largely through the victory of Almaty Express (22-1). For Glorious Goodwood week, we have two £25 bets as prizes, generously offered by Ladbrokes. One will go to the highest scorer in the usual manner, the other will be a sort of wooden spoon prize for the person who tips losers all week at the shortest average SP. Clearly, you'll have to decide at an early stage which of those prizes you're aiming at. Any winner at all will rule you out of contention for the wooden spoon, so don't be tipping 6-4 shots if you think they really might win; they'll cost you all chance of one prize without helping you much towards the other. Because of the nature of this competition, we'll return to having a full scoreboard for one week only. It's a Goodwood competition, so we won't start until tomorrow. But if you want to start your form studying, tomorrow's competition races will be: 3.05 Goodwood, 3.40 Goodwood, 5.25 Goodwood. For terms and conditions click here . See you back here tomorrow! Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets

25 July 2013 12:07:15 Sport news, comment and results | theguardian.com

The latest news and best bets plus day four of our weekly tipping competition Thursday's best bets, by Tony Paley At Sandown, Debdebdeb (2.30) , who had to play second fiddle to Great Hall when upped to this trip at Haydock, looks the one to be on in the Weatherbys Handicap. The Haydock winner is smart, while the third and fourth have both won since, so the form is rock-solid. Qawaasem (3.05) confirmed the promise of her Newmarket introduction third by returning there for the July Festival and winning what is traditionally an informative maiden. Charlie Hills has a good team of two-year-old fillies and this daughter of Shamardal can improve past her debut conqueror Lamar, who no longer has the edge in experience. Tipping competiton - day four Our winners so far this week: Monday Someone's Darling 7-4 Dartrix 7-2 Lodgician 5-1 Tuesday Golden Jubilee 7-2 Men Don't Cry 9-1 Spic 'N Span 14-1 Wednesday Almaty Express 22-1 Menelik 9-2 Boy The Bell 8-1 This week, our prize is a copy of Bloodline, the latest thriller from the Dick Francis stable, written by the great man's son Felix . Today we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 4.50 Sandown; 5.00 Bath and 5.30 Bath . As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. For terms and conditions click here . In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day. If you have not already joined in this week, you can do so today, but you will start on -3. Good luck! Click here for all the day's racecards, form, stats and results. Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets

24 July 2013 12:58:34 Sport news, comment and results | theguardian.com

The latest news and best bets plus day three of our weekly tipping competition Wednesday's best bets, by Tony Paley Angelito (4.00) left a rare poor effort when sixth at Redcar firmly behind at Windsor last time, finishing well after a sluggish start to take second. Though up 2lb for that effort at Catterick today, a quicker start could negate that rise and ensure he gets back to winning ways. Sandown's evening meeting is the most interesting of the day and Pearl Spectre (6.55) , who caught the eye in no uncertain terms in a maiden event at Newbury six weeks ago, should land short odds. Tipping competiton - day three Our winners so far this week: Monday Someone's Darling 7-4 Bold Prediction 9-2 Lodgician 5-1 Tuesday Golden Jubilee 7-2 Men Don't Cry 9-1 Spic 'N Span 14-1 And our leader on +9 is: NYStadium This week, our prize is a copy of Bloodline, the latest thriller from the Dick Francis stable, written by the great man's son Felix. Today we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 4.30 Catterick; 5.35 Lingfield and 5.40 Leicester . 17 July 2013 14:04:42 Sport news, comment and results | theguardian.com

The latest news and best bets plus day three of our weekly tipping competition Wednesday's best bets, by Greg Wood There were three scheduled handicaps at at Yarmouth last night with the perfect eight runners for each-way backers and all three ended up with fewer than eight horses going go post, so it was probably hoping for too much for the excellent three-year-old handicap at Sandown this evening to retain its shape. Sure enough, Keep Calm, one of the outsiders, came out of the race half an hour ago and the bookies will now pay only two places, but it remains an intriguing race of its type with several promising sorts from top yards at the head of the market. Four of the remaining seven runners are currently trading at between 3-1 and 4-1 on Betfair, with Mount Tiger, who won a maiden at Wolverhampton in a fast time last month, the narrow favourite. This is a tough race for a handicap debut, however, and Leitrim Pass (8.15) makes more appeal. William Haggas's has not had much go his way in two starts this season, but he remains on a fair mark as a result and is still open to improvement. Any advance on his close third at Doncaster last month, when he just failed to make up enough ground in a slowly-run race, could be enough to get him home in front this evening. Argent Knight (8.45) , who has been improving steadily this season without getting his nose in front, was only fourth at Haydock last time but he struggled to find racing room in the straight and the overall form of the race looks strong. Rain Mac (3.30) is the outsider of the field for his race at Lingfield but he has snippets of form which give him a chance, while Funding Deficit (4.10) has a decent chance in the sprint at Catterick this afternoon. Tipping competition, day three Our winners so far this week: Monday Bold Raider 4-1 Sennockian Star 5-2 Catflap 4-1 Tuesday Tartary 7-2 Niceonemyson 4-1 Sweet Talking Guy 9-4 And our leader is: Rivercity +13.50 who has started the week with two doubles, having picked Tartary and Niceonemysone yesterday. Woodywoody182 (+11.75) is chasing him hard, having had Tartary and Sweet Talking Guy yesterday. Today, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 4.10 Catterick, 5.00 Lingfield, 8.15 Sandown . This week, our prize is a copy of The History of Bath Racecourse, a smart little book by Jim Beavis on the 200 years of racing in the Somerset city. Among lots of other things, it promises new details on the Francasal ringer scandal which took place 60 years ago this week. As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not already joined in this week, you can do so today, but you will start on -6. The latest news and best bets plus day two of our weekly tipping competition Tuesday's best bets The Art Of Racing (4.15) missed a beat at the start before failing to make a serious impact at Haydock but had previously gone close when beaten half a length by progressive filly March at Windsor. He's worth another chance off his revised rating at Bath today. Tipping competition, day two Our winners so far this week: Monday Bold Raider 4-1 Sennockian Star 5-2 Catflap 4-1 And our joint-leaders are: woodywoody182 +7 Rivercity +7 . . . who both had Bold Raider and Catflap. 10 June 2013 12:47:54 Sport news, comment and results | theguardian.com

The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog Tipping competition - a new week Congratulations to mulldog, who pinched last week's competition on Friday night with Line Of Reason (9-1) and Medicean Man (10-1), taking his score to +37.50. That beat 72luca, who had led for days but finished on +30.25, still an excellent score. Mulldog, we'll be in touch about those Ascot tickets. This week's prize is a copy of Her Majesty's Pleasure, Julian Muscat's book about the Queen's involvement in horse racing which was named 'Racing Book of the Year' at the recent Sports Book Awards. It seems a timely prize, with Royal Ascot next week. If you don't win, you can buy a copy here . To kick things off, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 4.30 Newton Abbot, 5.15 Brighton, 8.00 Windsor . Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets

22 May 2013 13:06:23 Sport news, comment and results | theguardian.com

The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog, plus your chance to win Timeform's Racehorses annual in our tipping competition Wednesday's best bets, by Tony Paley The official racing is very ordinary fare on Wednesday, not helped by the fact that it's mostly all-weather and jumps racing. Though the cold weather due to set in over the next 24 hours will be a suitable accompaniment. By far the most interesting horse on the track is Telescope who will be completing a racecourse gallop at 1pm at Lingfield ahead of a possible run in the Derby next week, for which he is currently third favourite. Later on in the afternoon at the Surrey course Vertueux (3.30) makes most appeal on the card. He has been campaigned over a variety of staying trips so far this term and though he struggled at a mile and a half at Wolverhampton two starts ago, his run over two miles at Chepstow was much more like it and he could go one better. Tipping competition, day three We're continuing our experiment without scores, though we will be keeping you posted as to the leader's identity and score from day to day. The winners so far: Tuesday Green Earth 8-1 Monsieur Jamie 8-1 Mad Jazz 5-1 Monday Jack Luey 6-1 Fiftyonefiftyone 9-4 Hoofalong 9-4 And our leader is: jakebuckfast +13.25 . . . who was one of yesterday's joint-leaders and improved his position with Green Earth. Today, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 4.10 Huntingdon, 5.00 Lingfield, 7.30 Kempton . This week's prize is a copy of Racehorses of 2012, the latest annual from the highly respectred Timeform organisation, which assesses every horse that ran on the Flat last year and includes a lengthy essay on 80 of the most notable. This year's annual retails at £79, runs to 1,200 pages and was reviewed by Tony Paley here . If you don't win it, you can buy a copy here . You can see a sample of the book here . In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day. We'll persist with last week's scoreless experiment EXCEPT that this time we'll advise of the leading score each morning, so that you all know what sort of total you're aiming at. Then we'll name the winner on Friday evening. Thanks for bearing with us during this experiment, which certainly helps save some time for our hard-pressed team. As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Talking Horses: The best bets and latest news

15 May 2013 14:31:08 Sport news, comment and results | theguardian.com

The best bets and latest news in our daily horse racing blog Wednesday's best bets, by Chris Cook So the overnight rain total at York came to 18mm, almost twice the amount which was at the upper end of their prediction yesterday. Even so, the going is no worse than good to soft, good in places. We'll have to see this afternoon if that is accurate but it gives hope that the Dante may be run on something close to good because the forecast for tomorrow is for drying conditions. As for today, the conditions will be no disadvantage to the Musidora favourite, Liber Nauticus, but I'm frankly suspicious of a filly that we haven't seen for eight months, when her only win came in a Goodwood maiden that is working out just OK. Clearly the vibes are positive for her but that's little enough reason to take odds-on. Woodland Aria (2.45) is much more appealling at 9-2 for the John Gosden yard that has won the last two Musidoras with The Fugue and Joviality. She looked promising in landing a Wolverhampton maiden last month from which the runner-up has since been fourth in the Cheshire Oaks. Elsewhere, Silvery Moon (1.45) is versatile as to ground, has dropped below his last winning mark (from August) and should be better for his reappearance. I like him at 14-1. You can get 5-1 about Mince (3.15) for another big-field race, the Duke of York. I'm surprised she's not favourite over Maarek after the improvement she showed at the end of last year and I hope to see her best effort yet here. The going does not seem to matter much to her. Ladbrokes tipping competition, day three We're continuing our experiment without scores, though we will be keeping you posted as to the leader's identity and score from day to day. The winners so far: Tuesday Toto Skyllachy 5-2 Titch Strider 7-1 Riskier 4-1 Monday Mezzotint 12-1 Jebel Tara 7-2 Guest Of Honour 9-2 And our leader is: moidadem +15 Today, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 3.15 York, 3.50 York, 5.00 York . The best bets and latest news in our daily horse racing blog Friday's best bet, by Greg Wood Contributer (2.15) has been brought along steadily by Ed Dunlop since his debut in a hot maiden at Newmarket's July meeting last year, and won with something to spare on his three-year-old debut at Newbury last month. A son of High Chaparral, he improved for the step up to 10 furlongs and should have more to come on only his fourth visit to Chester. Tanner, we are told, has "scoured public and private sources . . . to debunk the myths and reveal for the first time the definitive account of what led to the events of that day and how they unfolded". If you don't win, you can buy a copy here . If you go to this page and use the code: 'GUARDIAN', you can buy the book at a discounted price of £14.99, saving £5!
